CRA tax update for September 2026: instalments, records and fall planning
A concise September 2026 CRA update for Canadian taxpayers and businesses covering tax instalments, CRA correspondence, GST/HST records and year-end preparation.
September instalments deserve immediate attention
CRA lists September 15 as one of the regular quarterly instalment due dates for individuals required to pay by instalments. CRA's instalment page explains its calculation options, interest and possible penalties.

Review CRA mail before year-end work begins
A Notice of Assessment, review letter or request for documents should be matched to the return and supporting records before responding. Note the deadline, reference number and exact documents requested.
- Use only an official CRA channel shown on Canada.ca or inside CRA My Account or My Business Account.
- Keep a complete copy of the CRA request and everything submitted in response.
- Escalate an objection or appeal deadline promptly; these deadlines are not the same as ordinary correspondence dates.
Businesses can use September for a GST/HST health check
Reconcile GST/HST collected with sales records, input tax credits with valid supporting documents, and filed returns with the general ledger. Confirm that every required return was filed—even for a nil reporting period when filing is required.
Businesses approaching the small-supplier threshold should review worldwide taxable supplies and the timing rules before assuming registration can wait.
