A practical Canadian tax filing checklist for 2026

The records, deadlines and review steps individuals and owner-managed businesses should organize before filing.

Start with the filing calendar

Most 2025 individual income tax returns and balances are due April 30, 2026. Self-employed individuals and their spouses or partners generally have until June 15, 2026 to file, although any balance remains due April 30.

Mark the applicable date early and leave time to resolve missing slips, bookkeeping gaps or questions about residency and worldwide income.

Build a complete record set

Gather income slips, investment records, business income and expense support, donation and medical receipts, and documents for other deductions or credits that may apply.

  • Confirm your legal name, address, marital status and direct-deposit information.
  • Reconcile business revenue to invoices, deposits and sales-tax records.
  • Keep documents supporting every amount reported and a complete copy of the filed return.

Review the result, not only the refund

A filing review should explain the taxable-income calculation, major credits, instalment exposure and the reason for a balance or refund. After assessment, compare the Notice of Assessment with the filed return and address any CRA change promptly.
